Painting Workshop 2007

"Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun."
- Pablo PicassoThe Painting Class watercolour by Vivian Chamberlin

The Gibsons School of the Arts invites you to come to learn how to transform yellow spots to suns in the summer of 2010. The slate of teachers for July and August will help you simplify the task in the style and medium of your choice. The classes consist of five days of art instruction from 9 am to 4 pm under the tutelage of an expert. The school prides itself on obtaining the best possible lecturers for these sessions and the steady growth of the school would indicate the satisfaction of the students with the instruction and assistance made available to them.

It is recommended that participants have some knowledge of art before attending the workshops. Because of the ability and professionalism of the instructors, rank amateurs have learned a great deal in one session, but other beginners have admitted to being somewhat overwhelmed with the plethora of knowledge being presented.

The classes are held in the former Gibsons Library - now renamed The Arts Building , at the corner of Wynn Road and South Fletcher Road, overlooking Gibsons Harbour and Marina and the North Shore Mountains. The climate is generally moderate, with few biting insects for the en plein air painter. In October 2009 the Town was named as the "World's Most Liveable Community with a Population under 20,000" by the United Nations-endorsed Awards for Livable Communities (Liv-Com). This, in addition to the "World's Purest Water" award of a few years ago, make it a pretty special place to visit. Each week begins with a Sunday evening reception where the class participants can become acquainted with the instructor and one another in a social setting to avoid that Monday morning strangeness. Those wishing to participate meet at the school. It's possible to bring your materials at this time and choose your table for the rest of the week.

Gibsons is blessed with many great B&B's, as well as good hotels, motels and campgrounds for those who need accommodation. Many ethnic, seafood and regular restaurants offer either quick or leisurely dining.

Partners who wish to accompany students to enjoy a holiday will find many activities to entertain them. There is tennis, hiking, boating, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, and four golf courses with varying degrees of difficulty.

There are many festivals held in the area in the summer months. We recommend a visit to the website http:www.gibsons.ca/festivals calendar.html for information.

The Gibsons School of the Arts is a not-for-profit organization made up of a group of devoted volunteers, who strive to bring you inspiring opportunities to learn to make your yellow spots look like suns.
